Volunteer Coordinator News
November 2024

The last but by no means least!

Welcome to our final newsletter of 2024!

As we draw towards the end of the year, it is the perfect opportunity to reflect on our own personal journey through 2024, as well as that of our organisations. We have experienced a lot of changes within national and local government including the launch of the unitary authority, as well as a new York and North Yorkshire Mayor.

As we continue to work through these changes, we look forward to seeing what 2025 brings for the VCSE sector and most importantly, our volunteers.

Brand new network for 2025

Following feedback from recent training and network sessions, we are facilitating a new network: Volunteer Views and Brews.

Starting online in February, this will be a regular, informal session for volunteers and trustees who are leading or managing other volunteers. Simply bring a cuppa and a question.

We hope to see lots of new faces and more details will follow shortly.

Vision for Volunteering

One of the key Vision for Volunteering themes is 'awareness and appreciation'.

In this example of shared appreciation, we hear from volunteer mentors based in Southend who support families with both practical advice and emotional support.

Through the experience, the mentors have gained skills themselves, as well as feeling empowered by the positive difference they have made by becoming a volunteer mentor.

Recruiting Volunteers

Recruiting is a never ending task for volunteer coordinators. Our network is here to offer advice with useful hints and tips on where to recruit new volunteers, along with ideas on how to encourage people to come forward who wouldn't ordinarily sign up to volunteer.

Buddle is an organisation which supports sports clubs. Their short film, 'Recruiting Volunteers' is useful for any volunteer-involving organisation as it offers simple ways to make recruiting a little easier.

The Community Life survey results

The Community Life survey 2024 results are set to be unveiled on 4 December.

This is the annual survey conducted by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and 'is a key evidence source for understanding more about community engagement, volunteering and social cohesion, sampling adults (aged 16+) throughout England'.

The survey will help inform strategic and volunteer plans as well as providing relevant data to put in place ideas for 2025 and beyond.

Avoid a data breach

Do you know what a data breach is?

You will have an idea, but may not always recognise a data breach when it occurs.

As you start to plan your New Year recruitment campaigns, sit back and read what data protection experts Hope & May say are the five main personal data breaches which organisations often fall fowl of.

Whistleblowing protections

A judge has allowed an appeal in a case that could extend whistleblowing protections to trustees.

We all know what a whistle-lowing policy is but have you or anyone you know ever gone on to use it? Did you assume that everyone related to the organisation is covered by the policy? In this landmark case we hear of the devastating consequences for a trustee who 'blew the whistle'.

Meet Ann Ferguson

Our final edition of 2024 welcomes a conversation with Ann Ferguson from Ryedale Carers Support. Ann is the newly appointed Chief Officer who was previously a trustee with the charity before transitioning to a paid role in July. Many thanks to Ann for taking the time out of her new and busy schedule to speak and share her story.

Please introduce yourself.

Hello! I am Ann Ferguson and I started working at Ryedale Carers Support based in Kirkbymoorside and Whitby in July 2024. My role is that of Chief Officer, working with a small group of really committed staff to provide volunteer befrienders to people across Ryedale and Whitby to give their carers a break, or to reduce loneliness and social isolation.

What attracted you to the organisation and role?

I have been a trustee at Ryedale Carers Support for a few years and then this role became available. It was too good an opportunity to let pass me by! It is a super organisation, very well-regarded across the area and within the local authority. I have worked in a range of different roles within social care all my life and in this role I am able to bring all my skills and experiences together in one place.

What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a Volunteer Coordinator/ Manager?

Volunteering is so incredibly rewarding, and it therefore attracts people for so many different reasons. The best bit about spending time with volunteers is getting to know them, to hear their life stories, and to see just how much value they can add to the lives of others and the development of your organisations. Never underestimate them! Great problem solvers, hard workers, quick thinkers and creative beings with so much to give.

What have you learnt about yourself while in this role?

If you need to know something… just ask the team! I have found the team to be so incredibly committed to the vision of the organisation, to be dedicated and hardworking, to be passionate and both knowledgeable and eager to learn. I know that I don’t like working alone, and work much better as part of a highly functioning group … and I have just that team!

Finally, tell us something about yourself that your colleagues would be surprised to know?

This is by far the hardest question of the lot! My hobbies are very predictable… I enjoy walking, I am an avid knitter, and more recently, I started keeping chickens which is an absolute joy. As for something others may be surprised to know… I worked for my dad providing admin support to his wine importing business but I’m almost 100% teetotal. No danger of drinking the profits!
