Your latest update from the Age Friendly Network

Hello and welcome to our autumn issue

As the seasons change, we’re bringing you updates that matter - from concerns about patient transport services to the heart-warming impact of Age UK’s friendship programme.

We’re also gearing up for the International Day of Older People and encouraging everyone to check if they’re missing out on Pension Credit.

Plus, we reflect on our recent network meeting on ageism and how we can all help build a more inclusive community.

As always, we’d love to hear from you - whether it’s a local event, a good news story, or something you’d like to see in future newsletters.

Stay warm, stay connected and thank you for being part of the Age Friendly Network.

We sparked a great debate on ageism

We had a great turnout for our last Network meeting in August, sparking some powerful conversations around ageism - what it looks like, how it affects people, and what we can do to challenge it.

We explored real-life issues like difficulties accessing cash and banking services, the need for more inclusive public spaces and the importance of seeing older role models in the media. It was a thought-provoking session with lots of ideas for action.

Save the date! Our next network meeting will be in November 2025 - keep an eye on your inbox for details.

Celebrating this year's International Day of Older People

This year's International Day of Older People will take place on October 1, and across North Yorkshire, communities are coming together to celebrate the incredible contributions that older people make. From tea dances to health fairs and singalongs, there’s something for everyone!!

And, if you're in Northallerton, look out for the North Yorkshire Police and Fire HQ flooded with purple light to mark the day – a powerful symbol of support for older people in our communities.

Hosting your own event? You can submit all the details for free on the following websites:

  • Harrogate & District Community Action (not just for Harrogate events).
  • North Yorkshire  Connect.

Let’s make this a county-wide celebration of older people and the contributions they make every day!

Blog: Recognising the value of age

With the International Day of Older People firmly in her calendar, Community First Yorkshire Chief Executive Jane Colthup, has put pen to paper calling for more action to challenge stereotypes.

She writes: "Older people are the backbone of our communities - they bring wisdom, resilience and compassion. This International Day of Older People is a chance to celebrate their contributions and challenge the ageism that still holds many back."

If you can't get there, you can't get care

Changes to NHS patient transport rules mean fewer people now qualify for help getting to hospital and clinic appointments - leaving many stranded.

This is already affecting people across North Yorkshire, especially older residents who rely on transport for essential care and treatment.

If you or someone you care for has been affected, Healthwatch North Yorkshire wants to hear your story.

They have launched a new survey and your feedback could help them push for fairer, more accessible transport.

Are you missing out on Pension Credit?

Over 6,000 people in North Yorkshire could be eligible for Pension Credit - but aren’t claiming it. That’s up to £20 million in unclaimed support every year!

Pension Credit is a 'gateway benefit' that can boost your income and unlock extra help - including support with everyday costs, NHS dental treatment, and the winter fuel payment.

If you're over State Pension age and on a low income, you might qualify. It’s easy to check, and help is on the way - North Yorkshire Council is developing a new process to make applying even easier.

Befriending service gets welcome boost

Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors has received a generous donation from the Julia Rausing Trust to support its friendship services. This funding will help connect older people who are experiencing loneliness with volunteers who offer companionship and encouragement.

Loneliness affects thousands across Yorkshire and Humber - with 97,000 people aged 65+ saying they have no friends.

Age UK’s service helps people like Graham, who hadn’t left his house in 20 years but is now doing his own shopping with his lovely volunteer and going for well-being walks.

Want to volunteer or learn more? You can email Age UK or call 01723 379058.
