Self-harm peer support group facilitator

Battle Scars is a charity aiming to support anybody affected by self-harm. We have a broad definition that includes all physical and psychological self-harm (including eating disorders).

We are a Leeds-based charity with most of our services located in Leeds. But we're expanding out of Leeds with our adult peer support groups.

In this round of recruitment applicants must be over 18.

We're looking for 3 people wishing to train up to become group facilitators and co-facilitators at our daytime Harrogate group. The group isn't set up until we have the volunteer team ready but it'll be taking place at the Mind in Harrogate building, 12.30-2.30, day of the week to be confirmed, every 4 weeks.

We offer purpose to those who lack it, friendship, encouragement, full support in each role, and opportunities to develop your skills and increase your confidence.

We encourage applications from people with complex mental health issues (personality disorders, PTSD, autism etc), people from BME communities and LGBT+. Battle Scars is a person centred, all-inclusive organisation.

Skills or experience required?:

Current personal experience of struggling with self-harm is required for the primary group facilitator role. If your experience with self-harm is indirect (such as partner, parent or carer of someone who self-harms) there is the option to become co-facilitator. Full training will be provided, plus a gentle easing into the role when you feel ready. We prefer to allow our volunteers to develop at their own pace.

Training will take place in Leeds and almost all of it is on Saturdays. Please bear in mind that the compulsory training for this role is a total of 6 days, 5 of which are Saturdays. Group facilitator training (4 days) must be completed before taking on the role.

Travel expenses to training and once taken on the role of group facilitator will be covered. If you have childcare issues please discuss it with us first.

The group facilitator's/co-facilitator's time commitment is 3 hours every 4 weeks. The group will be located at the Mind in Harrogate building, day of the week hasn't been decided yet, time will be 12.30-2.30.
