Conservation Grazing Voluntary Trainee

This a baa-rilliant role if you would like to gain experience working with livestock within the conservation sector. As a Conservation Grazing Voluntary Trainee you will gain skills and experience in all aspects in conservation grazing, livestock management, plus the opportunity to learn about conservation in general.

Low Carr Farm is a 100-acre grassland farm where most of lambing and welfare checks takes place for our 600 + flock of Hebridean sheep. We also have 26 Highlands cows under our care of the Rural Grazing Project which we aim to expand in the future with potential different breeds to be considered.

This is an exciting and varied role which promises to give you a great mix of skills! Former voluntary trainees in this role have gone on to great careers in both the farming and conservation sectors, including farm managers, conservation grazing officers and community farm assistants.

There could also be an opportunity, if the current challenges we face regarding Covid-19 change, to learn on-farm practical skills and take part in some work at Appleton Mill Farm. This is a small mixed farm which has a herd of pedigree Beef Shorthorn cattle and is set around diverse woodlands and grassland areas near the village of Appleton- le- Moors in North Yorkshire.

Ideally you will have a driving licence as there may be some on-road driving of tractors and Trust vehicles, plus the farm is in a rural North Yorkshire location that is not easily reached without access to a car.

This role is for 12 months, for 3 days a week, comes with a competitive training budget and travel expenses.

*Please note that any tasks involving sheep and lambing can be harmful to a pregnant woman, so please bear this in mind when applying*
