Volunteer Speech Support Worker

Speak With IT are recruiting for Volunteer Speech Support Workers across Yorkshire who can provide valuable one to one support for people with aphasia (speech and communication difficulties) either on Zoom or in the home.

This volunteer role is perfect for someone with an interest in speech and language therapy or the wider healthcare sector and/or someone who wants to give back to their community.

Our volunteers support people with aphasia in their own home or over zoom with appointments organised around your availability and the people you are supporting. Appointments are centred around the use of speech therapy apps and volunteers will regularly be requested to review their client's progress, set new challenges and ensure the client is working towards communication goals which are functionally relevant for their needs. Conversation is also key and volunteers are trained by SWIT speech and language therapists to scaffold conversation with clients to provide them with the space to express themselves and their needs.

The frequency of appointments is negotiable dependent on preference and availability but at a minimum we would ask volunteers to organise appointments with their clients on a monthly basis with a view to taking on 2 or more clients for support. Due to the investment it is necessary for Speak With It to make in it's volunteers, we request a minimum commitment of 12 months for the opportunity.

With kindness and compassion our Volunteer Speech Support Workers support individuals dealing with communication problems caused by Aphasia and help them to work on communication goals and to build their confidence.
