Malton Museum

Volunteer Opportunities

Background
Established in 1935, this small independent volunteer ran museum with nationally important Roman collections and material of local interest from all periods, faced closure in 2012 when the lease on its premises expired, with no suitable alternative. Many museums would have withered. In 2013 we obtained two large rooms in Malton's Subscription Rooms to showcase changing displays and share some of the Collection with the public. The volunteers rose to this challenge and the museum is more engaged and active than it has ever been.

Our collection
Malton Museum holds a nationally important Roman collection of artefacts. In addition to objects relating to the area’s Roman past, there are items belonging to more recent periods, including artefacts connected with horse racing, brewing and other aspects of local life. Among its most popular pieces are a Roman jet bear, a Roman roof tile imprinted with a child’s footprint and boots and saddle from horse trainer and breeder Sir Guy Cunard.
